Chapter Nine

C assie was sitting up in bed, waiting for Jack, when he breezed into the room. “First off, I want to thank you for trying to protect me,” she said. “But it isn’t necessary. I can take care of myself.”

He chuckled. “Right. You were doing such a fine job of it when I found you sprawled in the muddy alley.”

“Well, except for that,” she had to admit. “But I’ll go back to town this evening so I won’t inconvenience your family more than I have already.”

Jack loomed over her. “Don’t you get it, buttercup? People are trying to kill you. Or you’re trying to kill them. I’m still trying to figure out which. Either way, I want you off the streets.”

He swooped down unexpectedly and kissed her right smack dab on the lips. “Damn, I’ve wanted to do that since I found you in the mud…dead…or at least I thought you were. Unfortunately, there have been dozens of people milling about. I haven’t been able to get you alone and conscious at the same moment.”

He was in an odd mood, she decided. He was half serious and half teasing, but the instant his sensuous lips slanted over hers, she forgot everything except the erotic pleasure drifting over her.

“Do that again,” she murmured. “I think it’s curing my concussion.”

A slow, wicked smile slid across his lips as his golden eyes focused pointedly on her mouth. “If you think it helps, I’m at your service.”

Cassie looped her arms around his broad shoulders and savored the warmth of desire that channeled through her body. She reminded herself that if the blow to her head had cracked open her skull she might be dead right now.

She would have missed this delicious pleasure. Jack might have reservations about her possible involvement in the bank teller’s death, but he seemed to be as vulnerable to this explosive attraction between them as she was. She wondered if it was purely physical on his part. Most likely, she decided, but she wasn’t asking for more than Jack could give.

When his hands drifted over her breasts, setting off sweet tormenting sensations, Cassie admitted to herself that she was slowly but steadily falling in love with Jack. It wasn’t just physical. She liked him. She liked being with him, liked matching wits with him. True, he infuriated her at times, but he was a good, honest, caring and protective man.

She might even be willing to risk her heart if she knew that he actually enjoyed her company and respected her opinions. Sometimes she got the impression that he did like her for who she was and what she stood for. Then he’d get that carefully guarded expression on his face and retreat emotionally. For the life of her, she couldn’t figure out what troubled him.

When his hands moved gently over her again, she decided she didn’t care about anything except the pleasure of his touch. She was caressing him and he was caressing her. She would savor the moment for as long as it lasted and worry about getting her heart broken later.
